Dear Brother

“Bie likai wo!”

“...My son!”

Nathaniel heard sobs and screams—blaring sound of sirens—unrecognizable chatters. He was standing on one familiar sideway that reeked rancid smell of blood and rain. He felt light—strangely dizzy. There were at least half dozen people with black uniforms, the rest that wore white coats, and several other whom he could not recognize the faces. Dragging his surprisingly weightless limbs, Nathaniel tried to get through the crowd and see what happened. He gasped as he spotted his mother in the middle. It was the first time in the boy’s life to witness the woman in such a state. Her long raven hair was a mess; her plump lips shivered uncontrollably, tears kept pouring from her slant eyes; a pair of black that was similar to his own. She was sitting on a puddle of blood, hugging a rigid body covered in horrid cuts and gaping wounds

“Erzi—wo qin’ai de erzi!"

His mother kept on chanting those Mandarin words like a mantra. His father, a stout Chinese man normally looked so charismatic was crouching beside her, looking just equally miserable.

Poignant tightness began to consume him he felt like suffocating. This must be a dream, Nathaniel assured himself but the other part of him knew better it was more than real. Nathaniel was about to draw near his parents when an auburn-haired girl walked passed him and rushed to the couple. It was June Daphne, his brother’s girlfriend.

What happened? The 17-year-old lad wanted to ask but his voice disappeared on the tip of his tongue.

“What happened?” somebody asked,

“Darren—“June’s voice was hoarse; “...he’s dead.”
